Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Medical Imaging

Since its establishment, our Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Medical Imaging has been responsible for clinical diagnosis, teaching, and research in the field of oral and maxillofacial radiology. Currently, it serves as:

  1. A vice-chair unit of the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Committee of the Chinese Stomatological Association.
  2. A national standardized training base and faculty training base for oral and maxillofacial imaging diagnosis.
  3. A vice-chair unit and founding chair unit of the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Committee of the Guangdong Stomatological Association.
  4. The director unit of the Pan-Greater Bay Area Oral and Maxillofacial Imaging Specialist Alliance.
  5. A training unit for master's degree candidates specializing in oral and maxillofacial imaging.

The department currently employs 32 staff members. All diagnostic physicians hold at least a master's degree, including 2 with doctoral degrees and 4 with master's degrees. The department director concurrently serves as:

  1. Vice Chair of the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Committee of the Chinese Stomatological Association.
  2. Deputy Director and Founding Chair of the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Committee of the Guangdong Stomatological Association.
  3. Member of the Imaging Center Management Professional Committee of the Guangdong Hospital Association.
  4. Member of the Oral Education Committee of the Guangdong Stomatological Association.
  5. Member of the Temporomandibular Joint Committee of the Guangdong Stomatological Association.

"Precision diagnosis and treatment begin with imaging." Oral and maxillofacial medical imaging diagnosis forms the foundation for precision medicine in oral and maxillofacial diseases. Our specialty provides a robust imaging diagnosis platform for patients. We operate 36 radiology examination rooms located across our Yuexiu Campus, Tianhe Campus, Dongpu Outpatient Clinic, and Zhujiang New Town Outpatient Clinic. Equipped with state-of-the-art dental radiology equipment and various advanced imaging technologies, we perform over 1,100 X-ray examinations daily, reaching up to 1,500 during peak periods. In 2025, we expect to conduct over 390,000 examinations and issue more than 72,000 imaging diagnostic reports, ranking among the highest volumes in South China.

Our department offers diagnostic services including: Oral and maxillofacial X-ray diagnosis，CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) diagnosis，Spiral CT diagnosis，Chest X-ray and spiral CT diagnosis.

Sub-specialties in imaging diagnosis include: Endodontic and Periodontal Radiology, Dental Implant Radiology, Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Radiology, Maxillofacial Tumor and Tumor-like Lesion Radiology, Orthodontic Radiology.

Routine diagnostic procedures encompass: Localization imaging for impacted and supernumerary teeth, Pre-operative imaging for dental implants, Imaging diagnosis of jawbone and TMJ diseases, Imaging diagnosis of maxillofacial developmental deformities, Imaging diagnosis for orthodontic patients, Imaging diagnosis of endodontic and periodontal diseases.

Our specialized diagnostic service level ranks among the most advanced nationwide. We frequently provide imaging consultation services for complex cases to other dental institutions within Guangdong Province and across China. Notably, we have provided remote consultation services to the Wuhai First Stomatological Hospital for 12 consecutive years, effectively promoting the development of our specialty and enhancing the dental medical capabilities of relevant institutions.

The department undertakes multiple teaching reform projects at Sun Yat-sen University, as well as provincial and municipal scientific research projects. We have published over 70 research and teaching papers, received one Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress from Guangdong Province, two Teaching Achievement Awards from Sun Yat-sen University, and served as deputy editor-in-chief for one national planned textbook.
