“Guanghua” refers to the meaning of rejuvenation of the Chinese nation embracing an unyielding spirit of self-strengthening. In 1908, Guangdong Guanghua Medical School emerged at the dawn of a new era, which was the first western medical school in China. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Guanghua Medical School became part of Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Science, making it one of the three foundational pillars of Sun Yat-sen University’s medical education.

In 1974, Guanghua School of Stomatology, Sun Yat-sen University and its affiliated Hospital of Stomatology were founded on the original site of Guanghua Medical School, continuing its century-long medical legacy.

Forged in the storms of a hundred years, Guanghua has continually upheld the noble aspiration of "To heal the disease, the body, and the soul; to save the person, the nation, and the world." For fifty years, unwavering in their mission, Guanghua people have adhered to the institutional motto of "Excellence through sincerity, beauty through perfection" , securing a leading position nationally, ranking 43rd globally and 1st in South China in the 2025 QS World University Rankings.

The Affiliated Hospital of Stomatology, Sun Yat-sen University is a national-level hospital under the National Health Commission. As one of the first joint provincial-national regional medical centers, it is fully committed to expanding and balancing the distribution of high-quality medical resources. The hospital has 720 dental units and 120 inpatient beds, and comprises 14 clinical departments and 8 medical technical departments, covering all 8 national key clinical specialties in stomatology. The hospital operates three campuses: Yuexiu, Tianhe, and Nansha (under construction). Yuexiu Campus boasts a rich heritage, Tianhe Campus embarks on a new journey, and Nansha Campus brims with potential. This "One Hospital, Three Campuses" model is synergistically pooling strength to build a new highland for oral healthcare in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

The Guanghua people always foster patriotism and embrace responsibility with unwavering commitment. Kindness lights up hope, and the power of medicine brings back smiles. With white coats as our armor, we stand together through thick and thin. Our reach extends across the GBA and penetrates deep into over ten provinces, including Tibet and Xinjiang. Healing beyond borders, we are dispatched to Thailand, Pacific Island nations, and other regions along the Belt and Road. The radiance of Guanghua reaches far and wide, its enduring legacy thriving across time.

Guanghua School of Stomatology is authorized as one of the initial institutes to run the national first-class undergraduate programs. It has a distinguished faculty, including specially appointed professors from national major talent programs, National Baosteel Outstanding Teachers, and Guangdong Provincial Teaching Masters. Guanghua is dedicated to cultivating innovative, interdisciplinary "Stomatology+" talents who are distinguished for both ethics and excellence, possessing a profound sense of patriotism and an international strategic perspective. The quality of talent training of Guanghua has steadily improved, offering eight national first-class undergraduate courses and winning the First Prizes of the Guangdong Provincial Education and Teaching Achievement Awards in 2018, 2020, and 2022 consecutively and Special Prize (highest award) in 2025. Guanghua took the lead in establishing the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Higher Education Alliance for Stomatology" and established deep partnerships with leading universities in the UK, the US, Canada, Japan, thus forging a pathway for aspiring students to reach the summit of medical academia.

Now a group of nationally recognized innovative talents have gathered in Guanghua, including Professor Lili Chen, recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and Chair Professor under a national major talent initiative; Professor Songtao Shi, recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and Principal Scientist for the National Key R&D Program; Professor Juan Xia, recipient of the Leading Talent under the National Special Support Program for High-Level Talents, and Professor Zhi Wang, recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.

Professor Junqi Ling, Vice President of the Chinese Stomatological Association and Honorary President of the Hospital of Stomatology, Sun Yat-sen University; Professor Bin Cheng, member of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and President of the Guangdong Stomatological Association, along with over twenty Chairs and Vice Chairs of other National Professional Committees, they work together to advance the vigorous development of the discipline. Some national-level young talents, such as Professors Zetao Chen , Xiaoxing Kou, Cheng Wang, Yujie Liang, and Shuyi Wu, carry forward the legacy and break new ground.

Relying on the support of seven major science and technology innovation platforms, Guanghua has made groundbreaking achievements in several areas, including basic and clinical applications of stem cells, craniofacial growth and development, oral biomaterials, and oral cancer prevention and treatment. These efforts continually write new chapters in the development of stomatology, showcasing the wisdom of Guanghua and the strength of the GBA to the world.

Looking back on a century of history, Guanghua has always stuck to its founding mission of rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Looking ahead, it embraces the responsibility of contributing to the Healthy China initiative.
