Department of Periodontics

The Department of Periodontics, established in 2006, is a National Key Clinical Specialty and a Key Medical Specialty of Guangdong Province. It is recognized as one of the most influential and distinctive stomatology specialties in South China.

Faculty

The department boasts a high-level medical team comprising 57 healthcare professionals, including 27 dentists (11 with senior professional titles) and 30 nursing staff. The academic leader, Professor Chuanjiang Zhao, is a renowned periodontology expert in China. He currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Periodontology Committee of Chinese Stomatological Association and Chairman of the Periodontology Committee of Guangdong Stomatological Association.

Clinic

This specialty focuses on periodontal soft and hard tissue defects caused by periodontitis, as well as associated aesthetic and occlusal dysfunctions. Advanced medical apparatus and instruments, such as periodontal endoscopes, lasers, and Florida Probe, are used to diagnose and treat a broad spectrum of periodontal diseases. In addition to providing conventional periodontal treatments such as oral hygiene education, supragingival scaling, subgingival scaling, and periodontal flap surgery, we actively perform advanced procedures, including guided tissue regeneration, crown lengthening surgery, mucogingival surgery, and periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics. Simultaneously, the specialty has established a multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment system, conducting collaborative management of complex cases. By applying advanced digital technology for multi-dimensional quantitative analysis of patients’ conditions, we formulate personalized treatment plans to maximize the restoration of patients' aesthetics and masticatory function.

Education

The Department of Periodontics offers comprehensive didactic and clinical education in periodontology at both predoctoral and postdoctoral levels, along with continuing dental education for practicing dentists and hygienists. Our flagship “Periodontology” course has been recognized as a “National First-Class Undergraduate Course”. In the past three years, the department has been approved for 3 provincial-level and 7 university-level educational reform projects, and has published 6 SCI papers on medical education. Faculty members have been honored with numerous prestigious awards.
