Department of Oral Medicine
Established in 2006, the Department of Oral Medicine, Hospital of Stomatology, Sun Yat-sen University, is one of the earliest independently established oral medicine departments in China, focusing on systematic precision diagnosis and treatment of oral mucosal diseases. Through years of development, our department has evolved into a highly regarded center for diagnosis and treatment of oral mucosal diseases in South China, meeting the standards of a national key clinical specialty and ranking among the country’s leading units.

Expert Team and Comprehensive Care
Our team consists of 20 highly qualified physicians—100% of whom hold doctoral degrees. Among them, 10 have senior professional titles, including 6 doctoral supervisors and 4 master's supervisors, all of whom are well-known experts in the field. While specializing in the integrated treatment of oral lichen planus, oral leukoplakia, and recurrent aphthous ulcers, the team also possesses extensive clinical experience in general operative dentistry (caries, apical periodontitis, and periodontal disease), offering patients "one-stop" diagnostic and therapeutic services.
Leading Research and Innovation
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) has emerged as a cutting-edge, minimally invasive treatment for oral leukoplakia, particularly cases involving moderate-to-severe dysplasia. Our department has established a complete PDT system guided by autofluorescence detection. This allows for non-invasive, precise intervention for leukoplakia and lichen planus, significantly improving patient quality of life. In 2024, with support from the Guangzhou Municipal Health Commission, the department launched a specialized project focused on autofluorescence-guided precision PDT. This initiative ensures accurate assessment and minimally invasive treatment with fewer postoperative complications, elevating the standard of care for complex cases to international levels.
Building on these innovations, our department has successfully developed a high-level laser medicine platform for oral mucosal diseases and filling a technological gap in South China. Additionally, our team has created a non-invasive cancer risk assessment model (with two patents pending), offering an effective tool for evaluating patient prognosis.
