Department of Pediatric Dentistry

I. Overview

The Department of Pediatric Dentistry in the Hospital of Stomatology，Sun Yat-sen University is the most distinguished and renown pediatric stomatological medical center in South-east China. It is dedicated to the clinical practice, teaching and research science in pediatric dentistry. In 2023, the department was accredited as a National Key Clinical Specialty, and Pediatric Dentistry was rated as a National First-class Undergraduate Course. Currently, the department serves as the Vice Chair Unit of the Society of Pediatric Dentistry of the Chinese Stomatological Association and the Chair Unit of the Society of Pediatric Dentistry of the Guangdong Stomatological Association. It takes the lead in establishing the Pan-Greater Bay Area Pediatric Stomatology Specialty Alliance, which has 43 member stomatological medical institutions from Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Yunnan, Hainan, Hunan, Liaoning, Xinjiang, Gansu and other provinces and municipalities across China. It plays an important role in the medical care, teaching and discipline development in pediatric dentistry across different region.

II. Platform and Team

At present, there are two department in Yuexiu and Tianhe Districts, with a total of 34 children-specific dental chairs and 3 general anesthesia operatory. Equipped with root canal surgical microscopes, 3D intra-oral scanners, engine-driving motor for root canal preparation, thermal-plastic canal obturators and electronic apex locators, the department laid a solid foundation for the precise diagnosis and treatment, as well as multidisciplinary collaboration for the children's dental diseases.

We have a well-structured team from residency to expert, all received rigorous and extensive training in pediatric dentistry. There are 17 physicians in total, all with master's degrees or above, and more than 88% hold doctoral degrees, including 6 senior title holders, 5 attending physicians and 6 resident physicians. All the team members are graduated from well-known stomatological medical universities such as Peking University, Sichuan University, Wuhan University and Sun Yat-sen University, and most of them went to renown institutions in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Japan and other countries as visiting scholars. our faculty members possess a certain level of competency in children’s dental health management, all equiped with an innovative mind and are devoted to this specialty.

III. Scope of Diagnosis and Treatment

The department mainly carries out the prevention and treatment of dental diseases and oral health management for children and adolescents aged 0-18. Routine medical services include: diagnosis and treatment of dental caries, pulp diseases and periapical diseases in primary and young permanent teeth; preventive fluoride application, pit and fissure sealing for dental caries; diagnosis and treatment of periodontal and mucosal diseases in children and adolescents; and treatment of dental trauma, etc.

 

IV. Specialty Features

Our team member continuously promotes the establishment of subspecialties and has formed a professional diagnosis and treatment system covering frequently-occurring and complex cases of pediatric dental diseases. We provide medical service in several branches in pediatric dentistry include early-age orthodontic treatment of malocclusion, pulp revascularization and apexification for immature permanent teeth, comprehensive management of childhood dental traumatic injury, pediatric behavior management, and dental treatment under general anesthesia , etc.

Our members are highly proficient in dealing with different clinical senarios in pediatric dentistry, they are competent enough in handling difficult cases. The department has evolved to become the specialized platform for the diagnosis and treatment of difficult and complex pediatric dental cases in South China, we strive to keep abreast with the most advanced concept and technology in childhood dental management.
